Frequently asked questions
What should I wear and bring?
Worn-in hiking boots or shoes, or warm, waterproof boots in winter. Comfortable outdoor clothes suited to the weather. A comfortable backpack. Sunscreen, bug spray, sunglasses and a sunhat for summer. Warm layers, toque, mitts, a neck tube for the winter. Your phone (you probably won't get a signal on the trail but you'll still need your camera!), binoculars. Your curiosity and wonder. I'll send you a handy checklist after you book.
What trails will we travel?
Trips will vary by the day, depending on conditions, road closures, your interests and needs. I try to hit some of the popular, well-known trails earlier than the crowds, but I'll also introduce you to some lesser-known routes and destinations. I'll let you know where we're headed after you book, or let me know if there's a route you're keen to try.
Will the trip still go if it's raining or snowing?
Yes, we'll go out in all kinds of weather––we just need to dress for it! Rain and snow doesn't usually last all day and honestly, the forest is lovely in all kinds of conditions. But if a major storm is expected or a tornado, I'll cancel the trip the day before, since we don't want to end up in Oz. You'll get a full refund, unless you want to put your payment toward a future hike.
What is your cancellation and refund policy?
I really hope you can make it out, but if your plans change, you can get a 100% refund if you cancel 7 days in advance of your hike, and a 50% refund if you cancel between 7 days and 48 hours before your hike.
Are you a certified guide?
Yes, I'm certified as an Interpretive Specialist and 4-Season Hiking Guide by the Interpretive Guides Association, as well as certified in Wilderness Advanced First Aid by the Wilderness Medical Associates International.
Do you provide transportation?
At this point I am not able to pick you up. I will either take a shuttle with you from Ottawa-Gatineau, or meet you at the trailhead, depending on schedules, routes, or your preferences. I'll let you know where and when to meet after you book.

About Big Pine Hikes
“I like how I didn't feel like I was being too guided around. There was some leniency to the experience: people were discovering plants on their own.” ––Clifford, Ottawa
